I have the chance to buy a dark blue 456M GTA. A few minor issues:

1. The heads are now off the car (suspected head gasket issues)

2. Its an automatic 4 speed (yuck)

3. I don’t know if all the parts for the reassembling the heads are there

4. Its got about 60k miles - decidedly out of Ferrari collector status, so its potential upside value is very limited.

Nonetheless..... tempting?

Also please note photo above is for 456 pre 456M (I like the earlier hood-scoop look better)

Think the 8.4 V10 from a Viper would fit if you couldn’t get the old engine back together?

Too bad the 456 doesn’t use the GM automatic, so an LS swap isn’t as easy as it is in the 400i :p

It’s an Automatic.

Do you for sure have the funds to fix it and will you get enough joy out of it to make it worthwhile? Those are the two main questions.

Very much depends on how cheap.

I wouldn’t buy an automatic one as far as I’m concerned but up to you...

60k isn’t a deal killer. The auto is. But if it’s dirt cheap perhaps money to be made.

Here’s why you just walk away from this one:

Points 1 & 3 are the real deal breakers for me. Add point number 2, and it’s a no-brainer in the “no” category.

It doesn’t sound like the current owner even knows what’s really wrong with it now. You might get it home running, but discover there’s another Ferrari-priced repair needed.

You may be getting a screaming deal on this one, but drivers’ Ferraris do exist. I’m sure you’ll run into another hi-mile vehicle that actually runs under its own power; who knows, it may even come with a manual, too.

Meh looks, meh gearbox. But if it’s a good price you can say you owned a Ferrari and non-car people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference!

Not sure yet. Its under a sad circumstance the car is being sold, so getting a benchmark value from Ferrari Salvage Yards.

In good faith no - it would be by luck I get the car. Couldn’t just make a quick buck, it would have to be something I want to keep for a reasonable time. I looked into the 6spd conversion, doesn’t seem prohibitive.

yeah... you don’t wanna fuck with a transmission conversion. If you’ve got the money to throw at this car as it is (so purchase price + all the parts and work you’ll have to do) you’d be way better off just getting one that is more what you’re looking for

If it’s near worthless to a Ferrari enthusiast, sell the parts, and do something “sacrilegious” like this. I was thinking LS or Coyote at first, but yours is a much better idea.

Or put in a flat four from a Subaru. Honestly, do something to piss people off. Life’s too short to care.

I remember when the Abomination (notchback Mustang with a 2JZ) was on the front page. People lost their shit, I loved it.

Buy it, so you can right a article lamenting about it shortly afterwards. Gotta keep your content consitent.

I have loved 80% of my purchases - ‘83 DeLorean, ‘95 M3, ‘02 Z06, ‘91 Alfa 164.... its the standard non-M bimmers that I have a vile hatred for. Pure overpriced vanity without substance.
